FG to Announce Petrol Price in January, Kachikwu Clarifies

                                          Ibe Kachikwu

  • Says at current crude prices, there is no subsidy
  •  Ogbe: Funds should be diverted to agriculture
Chineme Okafor, John Shiklam in Kaduna and Adebiyi Adedapo in Abuja
Contrary to the perception created on Christmas day that the price of petrol would be reduced to N85 per litre effective January 1, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, sunday clarified that its official price would be announced next month.
He added that at the current price of crude oil, the subsidy element had been eliminated, but the price of petrol had not been deregulated nor would it be deregulated come January.
“It will be adjusted within the modulating band of N87 per litre to N97 per litre in accordance with the international price of crude oil,” he explained.
The minister, who made the clarification during an inspection tour of the Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), said the new price was imperative in view of the current market price of crude oil.
According to him, the price of petrol could go either way, “it may be increased above the current selling price or may be reduced below the current selling price all things being equal”.
He said his visit to the Kaduna plant was to enable him have an on-the-spot assessment of its refining capacity, stressing that the federal government was working round the clock to ensure availability and sustenance of petrol in a few weeks from now in order to end the fuel queues.
Speaking on speculations that the federal government intends to sell the refineries, the minister stated that there was no such plan to the best of his knowledge, pointing out that the government was working round the clock to ensure that the refineries operate at optimum capacity to satisfy the needs of Nigerians.
On the retention of subsidy on fuel, he did not conceal his displeasure over what he described as “political subsidy”, saying that the amount spent in the past was huge, but pointed out that government intends to introduce a price modulation band with a view to having a stable market.
According to the minister, “If there is an increase or decrease in the price of crude oil, we will make the necessary adjustment, so in January 2016, we will announce the new price of petrol in accordance with trends in the market.”
He said the Kaduna refinery was doing well, adding that more work needed to be carried out on the plant to make it operate optimally.
He said the refinery was currently producing about 1.5 million litres of petrol per day, but efforts were being made to produce about 2 million litres of petrol per day.
He said the current hardship being faced by Nigerians would soon be a thing of the past, adding that the queues, which are gradually disappearing, would completely cease to exist in a matter of weeks.
He stressed that the federal government was currently not paying subsidy on petrol due to the low price of crude oil in the international market.
Kachikwu also said that the situation would likely remain unchanged insofar as oil prices remain low, stressing nonetheless that he was more interested in ensuring that petrol is available and affordable than dwelling on subsidy removal.
He noted that the government was currently modulating the pump price of petrol to ensure that supply of the product remained in line with trends in the market.
Kachikwu also explained that by the end of January 2016, he expects that Nigeria would be able to source up to 10 million litres of her domestic petrol consumption from its four refineries in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna.
His clarification on the subsidy issue also became necessary following requests made by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) that he provides an explanation on reports that the government was going to deregulate the downstream petroleum sector and remove the subsidy on fuel.
On this, he said through the price modulation mechanism, the government would continue to monitor prices to keep it within a specified band.
“First let me say that we are expending too much energy on semantics. There are two critical issues here, one is should the federal government continue to fund the gap that we see – this a huge N1 trillion, and I think everybody is on the same page that we need to get out of it.
“Where we have a disagreement is if we get out of it, should we sell products at a certain price or should you let the free market to roll in so that you can skyrocket prices.
“Today, there is no subsidy, we are selling products at N87. In January, we will look at what the trend is and we will announce prices, if that is less than N87, we will announce it and if it is more than that, we will have to announce it.”
Kachikwu explained that his focus right now was to make sure that the refineries are working, saying: “The more they work, the higher the chances that we will be closer to the sort of pricing we are comfortable with than when they are not working. That is why you see me putting a lot of energies in going around the refineries.”
Kachikwu explained that President Muhammadu Buhari was backing the price modulation mechanism to keep it within the reach of Nigerians, adding that he was more interested in balancing market trends with such desire.
“The president is very emphatic on this, he says for now, he expects that products should be at N87. He has also given approval for us to be able to look at market trends and make adjustments as need be, so when you keep asking me if subsidy has been removed, I ask what is subsidy?
“At today’s price, there is no subsidy and that is why I have gone away from the use of the word subsidy and have continuously said that I am more on the page of price modulation. How do we look to fluctuate the market to reflect market dynamics?” he asked.
Continuing, he said: “I don’t want to get caught into this subsidy or no subsidy issue, or on money provided in the budget or not. I think what is critical is two fold: one is that the amount that we spent in the past on providing what you might call monetary subsidy is huge, we have never been able to account for it and the amount of corruption there, nobody has been held to account.
“The reliability of that and the affordability of that is an issue we need to get away from whether or not you believe in subsidy.”
Kachikwu said that in line with the desires of the president, he was pushing to establish a regime of efficient and affordable fuel supply in the country.
“Would you therefore free the price so that people can sell at whatever prices? Not likely, we would like to see some level of modulation where prices can relate to what the market dynamics are and that is what we are doing.
“My commitment and I think that is what the president’s commitment is, is one, provide products all the time so that there is efficiency, and provide it at the least possible price that you can and let it have some relationship with what the trends are,” he noted.
The minister also stated that “when the price of crude oil begins to go up – and we have an interest in both because we want the price of crude to obviously rise – and begins to affect the selling price of local products, we will look at those trends and then begin to see how we can adjust our pricing”.
“But we are not going to be adjusting prices on a day-to-day basis, we are going to take like an average price and I think that today when you look at prices, we have no subsidy but prices remain low and that is what we need to do,” he added.
Speaking on the volume of products he expects the refineries to add to the domestic requirements, Kachikwu explained that though the country would still import products next year, production could rise to 10 million litres of petrol a day from the refineries starting from the end of January when repair works would have been completed on them.
“Ideally, we want to be able to get to about 10 million-type capacity out of some 40 million that we say is the national consumption per day.
“All things being were equal, I think the maximum capacity for Kaduna will be in the 2 million to 3 million range, Port Harcourt will probably be in the 5 million to 6 million range, and Warri if it comes on stream will be another 3 million or 4 million.
“Warri is projected to come back between early and mid-January. So I will say that by the end of January, if all things are working and we do not have any other complications arising from these aging plants, we will expect to see 10 million litres,” he said.
But as the government gets set to adjust the price of petrol in line with the going rate of crude oil, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has said that the country will benefit more, if the funds earmarked for fuel subsidy are channelled into the agricultural sector.
According to Ogbeh, if the funds running into billions of naira spent on subsidising petrol are deployed to agriculture, this will guarantee long-term revenue for the nation.
Ogbeh, in a statement signed by the Director of Information in the ministry, Mr. Tony Oheari, also pledged support for all agriculture institutes in the country working on robust research to improve crop yields.
The minster also said part of the subsidy funds should be used to enhance the capacity of agriculture colleges and institutions and for extension services.
He explained that the essence of Colleges of Agriculture is to produce a new generation of young farmers to take over from the old ones, adding that all malfunctioning agricultural research Institutes would be fixed.
“The minister promised to establish extension offices to be manned by extension officers in all the local governments in Nigeria in the next four to six years, with students of Colleges of Agriculture involved in the new extension system,” he said.

Ijaw Leaders Caution on Possible Resurgence of Militancy in Niger Delta

                                                Asari Dokubo

*Plans to have audience with Buhari on national issues

Omon-Julius Onabu in Asaba

Ijaw leaders, including traditional rulers of the ethnic nationality in Nigeria, have expressed worry over the possible resurgence of militant activities in the Niger-Delta. The militancy appeared to have disappeared following the Amnesty Programme introduced by the Yar'Adua administration in 2009.

The leaders hinged their fears on the apparent attempt by the present Federal Government to jettison the amnesty scheme initiated to encourage various groups hitherto engaged in violent agitation in the region to abandon that position.

This is as the Ijaw leaders resolved to constitute a high-powered delegation to meet with President Muhammadu Buhari on national issues, including the seeming decision of the Federal Government to discontinue the amnesty programme, improving the lot of the Ijaw and the vexed issue of overall development of the oil-rich region.

Rising from a two-day retreat and stakeholders summit, which attracted leaders from 78 Ijaw clans and traditional institutions spread across the states of Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Ondo, Rivers and Akwa Ibom, the leaders noted that 2016 budget provision for the Amnesty Programme and the Niger-Delta region in general was grossly inadequate and left so much to be desired.

The summit convened by the Ijaw National Congress (INC), was held in Warri, Delta State and was concluded with the issuance of a communique.

SAD!!! Another Tragedy Hits France As 7 Die In ‘High Speed’ Train Crash

Tragedy Hits France As 7 Die In ‘High Speed’ Train Crash

While France grapples with the aftermath of coordinated terror attacks in Paris, a train accident in the eastern part of the country has added to the nation’s woes. At least seven people were killed after a high-speed TGV train derailed Saturday afternoon in Eckwersheim en route from Paris to en route to Strasbourg. About 11 others are reported injured.

The train is believed to have been testing the second phase of a new set of tracks between Strasbourg and Paris set to open in 2016, and several technicians were onboard, Grasswire reports. A French rail official says the derailment may have been caused due to excessive speed, thereby ruling out possible terrorism.

The train accident comes barely 24 hours after Islamic State terrorists killed at least 150 people across Paris, Friday night. While French President Francois Hollande vowed a “pitiless” response, ISIS said it will carry out more attacks in France

Not only Nigerians, see a west African village where every young man is trying to migrate to Europe and there reasons

In the village of Sabaa in eastern Gambia, one in eight people have taken "The Back Way" across the Sahara

Village life in Gambia, where many dream of leaving for Europe

Just like other young men in the Gambian village of Sabaa, Ebrima Touray dreams one day of getting married. First, though, he must prove himself as husband material - and these days, that involves a lot more than it did for his forefathers.
No longer is it enough to have good looks and own a decent patch of farmland. Today Mr Touray, 23, is expected risk his life on what is known as "The Back Way" - the perilous 3,000 mile journey across the Sahara and the Mediterranean in search of work in Europe.

A migrant from Gambia embraces a friend after safely completing the sea journey to Europe

“I want to be able to support a family, and to do that, I have to go to Europe," he said, tending the modest watermelon plot that is his only source of income. "Here in our community, if you do not go, you may not be able to even get a woman to marry. I must go - all my friends, those I used to play football with, are gone already.”
A glance at the village around him proves his point. Where was once a hamlet of thatched huts with spartan furnishings now boasts numerous homes with concrete walls, running water and tin roofs, some sporting satellite TV dishes.
Nearly all of it is paid for by remittances sent from locals now in Europe, with as many as 600 of Sabaa's 4,000 residents having tried "The Back Way", according to village elders.
Some succeed, some get deported, and some die en route. Yet no matter what the odds, today the expectation is that any young man worth his salt will give it a go. "Every parent wants their daughter to get married to someone who is in Europe," said Mr Touray.

Reign of fear

The scale of the exodus in villages like Sabaa demonstrates the challenges facing European leaders as they hold a major summit on Wednesday in the Maltese capital, Valletta, to discuss ways of dealing with the migrant crisis.
While the spotlight in recent months has mainly on the influx of Syrians from the east, an estimated 80,000 of the passengers on trans-Mediterranean people smuggling boats since 2014 have been from sub-Saharan Africa.
Gambia, a former British colony on West Africa's Atlantic coast, is a case in point. The tiny country of 1.9 million has neither war nor famine, and is best known to Britons these days as a budget winter tourist resort.

Tough guy - President Yahya Jammeh gives many Gambians cause to flee

But away from the beach resorts, it has much the same grinding poverty as the rest of West Africa - and is also one of the last countries in the region to languish under the rule of an old-school African strongman, President Yahyah Jammeh, an army officer who staged a coup 21 years ago.
Mr Jammeh, whose voodoo-infused personality cult draws comparisons to Haiti's Papa Doc Duvalier, first gained notoriety in 2007, when he claimed to have invented his own herbal cure for HIV.
Human rights groups have compiled fat dossiers against him, accusing him of jailing opponents and running torture chambers not far from Gambia's tourist beaches.
In 2009, Amnesty International also claimed that his presidential guard had force fed hallucinogenic potions to an entire village of Gambians accused of using witchcraft against him.
Faith healer: President Jammeh prays while administering his herbal HIV cure to a patient

While his record falls well short of despots like Charles Taylor or Idi Amin, it is bad enough to convince many Gambians that if they can reach Europe, they will stand a reasonable chance of being granted asylum, whether they have suffered directly at his hands or not.
The exodus, though, is not just a worry for Europe. It is also a major concern for Gambia, where the departure of so many young men is now threatening the long-term future of numerous villages like Sabaa.

Italian vet sacked from post after killing a lion on safari in Africa

Vet received death threats after photos of him posing with the predator emerged on social media

Vet received death threats after photos of him

posing with the predator emerged on social media

An Italian vet who killed a lion on safari in Tanzania, evoking comparisons with the furore over the death of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe, has been fired from his job as the director of a kennels.
Luciano Ponzetto was bombarded with hate messages after photographs of him emerged online posing proudly with a hunting rifle and the body of the dead carnivore splayed out in front of him.
He said he had received messages from people who said they wanted to run him over with a car and kill him.
He claimed that there was nothing “incompatible” with being a vet and killing wild animals for sport.

He said he had shot the lion several years ago and it had only recently come to wider attention through social media. And defenders said he had done nothing illegal because he had a permit to shoot the predator.
Turin’s veterinary association said Mr Ponzetto had simply indulged in a “hobby” which is regulated by law.
But the row attracted widespread media attention in Italy and the kennels where he worked in Caluso, a town near Turin, decided at the weekend to dismiss him as its medical director after 16 years of service.
“We are totally opposed to any form of hunting or abuse of animals, whether they be wild or domestic,” the association that runs the kennels said in a statement.
In a brief statement, Mr Ponzetto said: “I thank the kennels for the faith they have invested in me over the years.”

A man who raped his sister's daughter has died in mysterious circumstances from the curse she placed on him

A 68-year-old man from Ibam Edet Community in Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, identified simply as Ete Ibam , has allegedly lost his life mysteriously, few weeks after raping his sister's daughter.

According to those in the know, Ete Ibam who lived with his family in the Ori-Oke area of Ogudu, Lagos State, died on Thursday, November 5, just hours after he was taken back to the village after all medical treatment and tests could not decipher what the problem was with him.

A member of the Ibam Edet Social Club in Ogudu narrated how Ete Ibam met his death to Pulse.

"Ete Ibam's death is really a mystery but he led himself to such a gory death. What actually happened stemmed from the fact that he raped his sister's 18 year-old daughter and the girl laid a curse on him.

The mother of the girl lives in Ikorodu but the girl decided to leave home and go to Ogudu to live with her uncle.

According to the girl, on the night of the incident, she was sleeping in the room when her uncle forcefully had sex with her while holding a knife to her throat.

The girl then went Unclad and poured curses on him and not up to a month, Ete Ibam fell sick.

He started drying up and we took him to many hospitals but nothing was detected. It was at a church that a prophet said it was the curse the girl laid on him and she was told to remove the curse which she did.

People from the village who heard what he had done, told him to come home and appease the gods but he refused until the sickness became worse and he was taken home but immediately he stepped into his father's compound, he slumped and died."

A Baby Girl Got a Heart Transplant From a Baboon, see what happens after

The unusual story that came before the first successful pediatric heart transplant from an animal to human

It’s been exactly 31 years since Dr. Leonard Bailey transplanted a baboon heart into an infant known as Baby Fae. She lived for 21 days after the transplant, two weeks longer than anyone with a simian heart ever had before.
How did an infant end up with a baboon heart?
In Barstow, Calif., Stephanie Fae Beauclair was born three weeks premature with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a fatal defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. Though babies with the condition were expected to live for about two weeks, and Fae’s mother was given the option of letting her die in a hospital or at home, Dr. Bailey had another option in mind.
Other than her heart, Fae was in good health. A transplant would fix the problem, but this was new territory: even though transplant surgery had come a long way since the first human-human heart transplant was performed in 1967, no one had yet completed a successful infant heart transplant, mainly due to the lack of infant donor hearts. Given that shortage, Bailey, a pediatric cardiac surgeon at Loma Linda University Medical Center in California, had spent seven years researching xenografts, or transplants from other species.
Bailey’s research included, per TIME, “more than 150 transplants in sheep, goats, and baboons, many of them between species.” The first simian-human transplant had been performed in 1964 but the patient died a few hours after his surgery and only a few more were attempted after that; nonetheless, Bailey received permission to perform such a transplant on Baby Fae.
As 12-day-old Fae’s condition began to deteriorate on Oct. 26, 1984, the medical team choose a donor baboon and began the transplant operation. At 11:35 a.m., TIME wrote, Fae’s “new heart began to beat spontaneously. ‘There was absolute awe,’” recalled Sandra Nehlsen-Cannarella, a transplantation immunologist working on Fae. “I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room.”
While Loma Linda officials refused to reveal her exact age or name, video of Baby Fae was televised and she became a media sensation. Hundreds of people sent the tiny patient cards, flowers and money—while others expressed concern about the choice of a baboon heart, the consent form and the morality of the procedure. Writing in TIME, Charles Krauthammer called it “an adventure in medical ethics.”
Although Fae initially improved steadily, she began to decline 14 days after the transplant and died on Nov. 16, 1984. Upon her death, TIME wrote, “So ended an extraordinary experiment that had captured the attention of the world and made medical history. For three weeks the 5-lb. infant had survived with the heart of a baboon—more than two weeks longer than any previous recipient of an animal heart.”
Bailey would perform the first successful infant heart transplant the following year, in 1985.

'World's poorest president' gets $1mn offer for old VW Beetle

Uruguay's President Jose Mujica walks in front of his garage

An Arab sheikh seems to think the 'world’s poorest president,' Uruguay’s Jose Mujica, is in dire need of cash. He’s offered $1 million for Mujica’s iconic 1987 VW Beetle – but the pot-smoking leader says he will donate the money to the homeless instead.

“I didn’t give it any importance,” the humble ex-guerilla leader told a news conference, after the Uruguayan weekly Busqueda broke the story. He added that he has “no commitment to cars” and joked that his three-legged dog, Manuela, was pretty much the prime reason for holding on to the vehicle for so long.
Apparently it was Mexico’s ambassador to Uruguay who earlier suggested that Mujica sell off the car. They joked about how he could get 10 4WD trucks for the money, according to an anonymous source within the embassy.
In case the $1 million materializes, Mujica plans to donate the entire proceedings to a housing support program for the homeless. In case it’s the trucks, he has pledged to donate them to the country’s public health office, or to his campaign workers.

The president explained his decision by saying: "Human beings have a bit of fetishism; we need certain material symbols,” and added that he still keeps his father’s old hammer and shovel:"They are little things to the world, but are worth a lot to you."
The leader lives on a run-down farm, which is under his wife’s name. The only other prized possession of real material value he reportedly owns is the 1987 Beetle.

As far as official declarations of wealth go, Mujica earns a comfortable $11,000 a month, 20 percent of which goes to his political movement. He reportedly donates most of the rest of his salary to charities supporting the poor.
The social climate in Uruguay changed in 2010, when Mujica secured his victory. The former guerilla led a radical overhaul of drug policies on cannabis possession, setting a blueprint for other Latin American countries. The legalization of cannabis enabled Uruguayan authorities to combat the neighboring Paraguayan drug trade.
Mujica is widely seen as one of the world’s most down-to-earth leaders, who has often emphasized the need for people to love one another and not focus on the material.
"A president is a high-level official who is elected to carry out a function. He is not a king, not a god. He is not the witch doctor of a tribe who knows everything. He is a civil servant. I think the ideal way of living is to live like the vast majority of people whom we attempt to serve and represent," he once told Al Jazeera.
As for addictions, the only one Mujica says matters is "love."

Boko Haram female suicide bombers attack mosque in Cameroon

Security forces transport the remains of some victims

Two female suicide bombers suspected of belonging to the Boko Haram militant group blew themselves on Monday near a mosque in Cameroon’s Far North province, military officials said on Monday.
It was not immediately clear if the explosions caused other fatalities.
Boko Haram has led a six-year campaign for an Islamist state in northeastern Nigeria. Neighboring countries including Cameroon joined forces against the group last year, driving its offensive beyond Nigeria and displacing thousands of people.

Recent Revelation from Obama’s chef: ‘I teach in university but I never attended one’

By Sam Otti
President Barack Obama’s chef, Edwin Scholly, never attended any university for a degree programme. He embraced cooking instead as his first choice. But his career brought him fame and fortune in the past 20 years, such that he became a chef to George Bush, Bill Clinton, Obama and the Queen of England.
Scholly was in Lagos recently for this year’s 13-episode cooking competition, tagged ‘Making of the Chef’, a reality show organised by Rhodium Chef Global and Anchor Digital Media in partnership with Power Oil. He said his dream was to raise a national team for Nigeria that would compete in the Olympic Culinary Art.
Speaking on his qualification, he said: “I never saw the inside of any institute in my life. I never went to any university and today I teach in the university. Skills, discipline, understanding and common sense are vital for success in life. Everybody thinks he is a good chef but what makes the difference is skill and knowledge”.
He described the ongoing cooking reality show as an educational challenge, noting that Nigeria had so many hidden talents. “If we can gather them together, we will give the rest of the world a big challenge. There is so much talent to develop in this country that my team don’t even know where to start. My dream is to put Nigerian Olympic team together for culinary art. We tried it last year when the culinary Olympics was going on but we could not raise the amount of money fast enough to take our contestants we had in season one”.
Scholly commended Africa for being the only continent he travelled to host such competition. He said he would continue to scout for a team that would live his dream of having a Nigerian Olympic team in culinary art.
The Executive Producer, Making of the Chef competition, Idono Edewor-Gbenro, said the programme was initiated to encourage people with the passion for cooking. She faulted the popular belief that cooking was a low rated job reserved for house- maids.
“In developed countries, culinary art is a unique skill. Our goal is to change lives, one chef at a time”, she added.
She said auditions were held in different cities from where 20 contestants emerged. According to her, the best three contestants that would emerge at the next stage of the contest would travel to the Strafford University Baltimore for more training.
Idono-Gbenro said the 20 shortlisted contestants would be awarded a certificate of participation signed by Master Chef and the Director of Culinary School from Strafford University, USA and later employed by Spar, the largest of hypermarket stores in the country. She said the overall winner of the competition would bag a study scholarship that could run to a degree programme at the Strafford University.
Also speaking, the Marketing Director, Rhodium Chef Global, Moses Edewor, noted that foreign nationals mostly dominated the Nigerian cooking industry. He said the competition would reverse the situation by retooling the culinary skills of talented Nigerians and providing them high paying jobs in the sector.
“We want people to know that becoming a chef is not the regular houseboy that rich people hire in their homes. We want people to know that becoming a chef is also a six-figure job. Every time we go out to a nice restaurant and you were served a good meal, if you ask to meet the chef who prepared the meal, you will discover that the chef was from Lebanon, Europe or other foreign countries. Nigerians may be behind the scene but they never appear as the master chef”, he said.
Edewor lauded the life-changing impact of the contest, saying, “It is amazing how this show can touch lives. One of the guys that emerged at the top three in season one has actually been promoted three times in his place of work within a short period. He is now an executive chef where he works. Cooking is a talent. Culinary is something Nigeria has to take more serious,” he added.
Speaking on behalf of SPAR, John Goldsmith promised instant employment for all the 20 shortlisted participants. He said SPAR would also create more job opportunities for those that would participate in the third edition of the event next year.
He commended the organisers for their resilience in launching Season 2 of the competition, describing it as a great achievement. He expressed concern over the low employability of people in the country, stressing that his company would continue to key into initiatives that would enhance the skills of Nigerians and make them employable.
“Anyone that believes in the Nigerian story will definitely participate in this kind of effort”, he said.
Also speaking, Isioma Omumero Ogwilaya, the Business Development Executive, Anchor, Digital Media, the production crew handling the project, said the project offered an opportunity for learning new skills in cooking and modern packaging of food.  She said such an empowerment programme would keep many skilled youths in good employment.
While encouraging skills acquisition among youths, PR and Event Manager, Tolaram Group, Mr Tope Ashiwaju, said the competition would make people to be creative with what they know best.
“Apart from the healthy living we preach, Nigerians are also becoming conscious of what they eat, where they eat and who makes food for them. You don’t need to go to school to learn to cook. The educational system is encouraging people these days not to depend only on formal education to succeed in Nigeria.  In Nigeria, majority of people looking for job only have that paper certificate. This project is beyond the paper certificate but skills”, he said.

Dangote, one of two African most powerful people on planet

Dangote, one of two African most powerful people on planet

Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote typifies the new “African lions” whose business empires are winning a competitive edge over foreign multinationals because of their better grasp of local markets. “In emerging markets, there is no substitute for on-the-ground experience,” said a report released Tuesday by the US-based Boston Consulting Group, called “Dueling With Lions”.
When business magazine Forbes last week published its latest list of the most powerful people on the planet, Dangote was one of only two people on it from Africa. Egypt‘s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ranked 49th in the list, while the Nigerian tycoon was 71st, rated by his power over people and resources, financial clout and range of activity from cement, telecoms, oil and gas to sugar, flour and pasta.
Through hard work, shrewd business practices and tactical networking he has built an empire from South Africa toSenegal and become a regular at events such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. On November 5 the 58-year-old’s estimated net worth was $13.8 billion (12.7 billion euros), according to Bloomberg‘s Billionaires Index.

“You have to think big. If you think small, you will remain small in life. And you must be consistent. When you start a business, you might have hiccups here and there,” he said in an online video in 2012. “That does not mean that the business is not going to work. There must be challenges… you must know how to work round these challenges.”
The Lagos-based Dangote Group is Africa’s largest private employer with some 26,000 staff, giving it a head-start over foreign firms through local knowledge and long-standing relationships. Dangote Cement, which he hopes to list on the London Stock Exchange, has subsidiaries in at least 14 African countries.
In August, it signed a $4.3 billion contract with China‘s Sinoma International Engineering Co. for the construction of 11 new cement plants, 10 of them in Africa and the other inNepal. When completed, the company’s existing capacity of 46 million metric tonnes per annum is expected to be boosted by about 25 million metric tonnes.
As such, Dangote has positioned his businesses as indispensable in a changing continent, providing the raw materials to build its new infrastructure, fuel its growing industries and even feed its workers. In an interview on CNBC published in March 2014, he said: “Africa has come of age. The opportunities we have in Africa are second to none.”
In his home country, where patronage reigns, Dangote has courted politicians of all stripes and outlined plans to help develop badly-needed infrastructure. He recently signed loan agreements to invest more than $9 billion in a petrochemical refinery and fertiliser complex in the southwest — the country’s largest.
Philanthropy and football
President Muhammadu Buhari is keen to develop agriculture and he has re-started the country’s four existing refineries, which had run idle in favour of the expensive export of crude and import of products. The refineries have a total capacity of 445,000 barrels per day but are only currently producing less than half that. Dangote’s single plant aims to produce 400,000 bpd.
In an interview with CNBC in 2014, Dangote said of his drive to succeed: “Hard work pays. Nothing is impossible.” But he has also followed the example of tycoons such asMicrosoft‘s Bill Gates and Virgin’s Richard Branson of giving back to society. His Dangote Foundation has spent billions of naira on education, healthcare and disaster relief, including a $3 million pledge in December last year to help victims of the west Africa Ebola outbreak.
In 2012, he teamed up with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio in Nigeria. In September,Nigeria was taken off the list of the world’s polio-endemic countries. Like many Nigerians, Dangote is an avowed football fan and has long been rumoured to be keen on buying a stake in Arsenal, which could make him the first African owner of anEnglish Premier League club.
“I still hope, one day at the right price, that I’ll buy the team,” he was quoted as saying by Bloomberg in May. Few would put it past him.
